Quirky Firsts
There are the milestones...talking, walking, first solids...that everyone knows. But I thought I'd highlight two of the quirkier firsts.
Isaac has his first food dislike: millet. Millet is a wheat alternative grain and one of the superfoods from the eponymous book, Super Baby Foods. It also happens to be a popular bird food (though it is a traditional baby food all over the globe). Isaac, being a non-bird and a red-blooded 'Merican, hates the fancy foreign baby food. To prove it, he participated, unwittingly, in a scientific test. First we tried straight millet, twice. He hated it. This was two days ago. Then, today, Mom mixed a bit of millet into his normal, beloved multigrain cereal. It was so blended in he couldn't see it--only taste it. And...belch...he hated it. Then she tried to switch back to regular multigrain and he ate it up. Multigrain with millet...boo. Straight multigrain...yeh! So it is conclusive, he hates millet. We'll try again later, but I am not too upset he dislikes the bird food.
Then today Isaac hung up on me. Mom had to put him in the crib for a second while she did something and she left the phone in there for me to talk to him on my way home from work. She said "Dad, keep him company for a second." Then I heard a little rustling and my cellphone showed me the call ended. I never lose signal in this place and Bianca discovered the phone easily within his reach, so it is very likely that my son hung up on me. Probably the first time, almost certainly not the last ("I can't shoot Roman candles out of my hand? You stink. I am done talking to you.").
So there you go...not his first steps, but still pretty funny.
